Legal(ism’s) Abortion

Piper:  “And so Paul’s focus is on what the gospel does to people in heart and conscience and faith (1Tim1.5). This gives rise to love (v. 5). But if we turn it around and start using the law as the direct and decisive means of sanctification, it will be misused and will abort. We will fall under the criticism of verse 7: “[They have wandered into vain discussion] desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.” In other words, there are moralists who use simple teachings about right and wrong—even from the Bible—to get people to change behavior, but do not know what they are doing. They do not know that what they are doing is profoundly out of sync (kata;, v. 11) with the gospel. They don’t understand the way the gospel works.”
